Your Norwalk & Fairfield Children's Dentist

At Kids First Pediatric Dentistry & Orthodontics, we pride ourselves on providing excellent, personalized dental & orthodontic care in a warm, friendly, and welcoming office environment. Our doctors have years of experience working with kids of all ages and abilities, and our expert staff knows how to make a trip to the dentist's office a fun experience for everyone involved. We work hard to get to know every child individually, and we strive to make everyone's experience here a positive one.

Special Needs

No matter what their special needs or ability level, every patient that comes through our doors is treated as an equal and with the utmost respect at our office. Our dental team takes pride in our abilities to care for special-needs patients, and we continually educate ourselves on the latest literature and research in order to serve this population of patients with the highest standard of care.

Dental visits can be challenging for patients with special needs, even those who are well prepared. Prior negative experiences can have a direct impact on future visits and can create an overall negative feeling toward dentist's offices. At Kids First, we recognize that this can be a source of stress and anxiety for both you and your child.

Special NeedsWe strive to do all we can to give your child the best possible experience. We've implemented a variety of innovative techniques to help prepare your child for treatment, and we even have a dedicated "Special Needs Liaison" on our excellent dental team. We'll work closely with you from the first phone call through the completion of the treatment to ensure that your child has everything they need to make their treatment experience a positive one.

Comprehensive Support

We're committed to providing additional support to you and your child. We know that even activities like brushing teeth can present difficulties and challenges, so we'll provide extra tips and suggestions for daily activities like this and answer any other questions you have.

When you make your initial phone call to us, we'll give you the option of receiving an extra "comfort call" - this is where our Special Needs Liaison will call you to get more details about your child's unique situation prior to their appointment. This is a great resource, as we'll discuss your expectations, previous dental experiences, current dental needs, and any questions you have.

Tools & Techniques

We implement a variety of techniques and systems to help our patients with special needs through their dental experience:

A personalized activity schedule is a great way to explain what's going on to a patient. This will include a set of pictures, allowing your child to follow the process of their treatment through the images. This is a great help to those children with learning delays and children on the spectrum.

Sensory items are also available. Items such as putty, squishy balls, and other hand held manipulatives can help make children feel more comfortable in the office.

TV rooms are great too! If you would like a TV room, please let us know.

Rewards! Rewards! Rewards! We firmly believe in the power of positive reinforcement, and we encourage you to bring something great for today's visit or utilize the items we have. Modeling and rewards are two simple behavioral techniques that are easy to implement and very effective. When your child is given an instruction and then completes the task, he/she should be rewarded quickly - things like stickers, toothbrushes, and prizes. However, if there is an item you think would work better, please bring it with you. Positive reinforcement is one of our best tools to make this a great experience!
