At What Age Should Electric Toothbrushes Come Into Play for Your Kids? All kids see the commercials and advertisements for electric toothbrushes at some point or another. Many of them ask if they can have one, and most parents do not know the right answer.

Of course you would love to give your child something that will improve their oral health, but is it safe for them to use? When is too soon to give them an electric toothbrush? We break down the best time to give them that type of toothbrush, and what to watch out for, here.

Kids Should Get Electric Toothbrushes When At the Right Stage, Not Age

You need to look at what comes with an electric toothbrush before giving it to your child. They need to have the right level of independence when it comes to brushing their own teeth, and they need to understand how to move it around their mouth in order to get the most use out of it. The stage of development your child is at is far more telling than their specific age.

When a child understands how to go tooth to tooth and make sure each one gets clean on all sides, then giving them an electric toothbrush is not a bad idea. However, if all they are going to do is brush their front teeth on the top, then the ones on the bottom, and move it around their tongue, they will miss a significant amount of their teeth in the process.

If you are not sure if your child is ready, ask us at their next appointment. It is important that your child understand that it could be great for their oral health, if they use it right. We can work with you to explain that so they understand this is a big, important responsibility.
